JoplinFreethinkers.org

Born in January of 2009, the Joplin Freethinkers grew to a large group of people seeking knowledge, conversation, friendships and self improvement. All meetings are open to the public and you are invited to the next one.

Visit our forum for the details on our next meetings!

Meetings:

We meet every Thursday and Sunday.

  • Most of our meetings are purely social, and provide a great platform for friendships.
  • Thursday meetings are our official meetings, while Sundays are just a get-together for coffee and conversation.
  • Some meetings are topical and discussions are moderated allowing people to express their ideas in a serious environment.

Events:

For the group and for the public.

  • Events usually occur on a Thursday and replace the main meeting.
  • All events are either for the entertainment of the group or the education of the public, and reflect the ideals and core values of the group as a whole.

Activism:

We are serious but cautious!

  • We will not tolerate, nor ignore violations of human rights. We will actively defend our fellow citizens, and protest legislation that threatens the basic rights of human beings. If you feel like your rights are violated, or you are otherwise being oppressed, by law or community, let us know.

What to expect:

It is important to understand that the very nature of freethought is to doubt and question. Some people who have deeply woven beliefs may be uncomfortable at first with a group of people who ask you to explain your beliefs. Many people are unaware of the reasons, or lack of reasons they have for their own beliefs. Many people also justify their beliefs with reasons that others may not find valid.

Be prepared to look at yourself. Demand answers from others in the same way they demand answers from you. This is how we learn and grow. Embrace the discomfort and join us as we examine ourselves in the light of reason.
